Seat belt strap breaking load test
Feb 01, 2019
Paragraph 2.7.5. Directive No. 16 of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE 2018/629), which entered into force on July 19, 2018, describes the algorithm for testing the seat belt tape for breaking load.
Test algorithm
- The belt shall be clamped between the clamps of the tensile testing machine. The clamps shall be designed to prevent the belt from breaking at or near the point of contact with the clamps. The rate of divergence of the clamps should be about 100 mm per minute.
- The load should then be increased until the belt breaks and the breaking load should be recorded.
- If the belt slips or breaks at the point of contact with one of the clamps or within 10 mm of any of them, the test shall be considered invalid and another test shall be carried out with a new specimen.
The minimum required breaking load of a car seat belt webbing is 1500 kg.
We have tested our custom seat belt tape, 47 mm wide, 1.1 mm thick. The breaking load was 22.12 kN, which equals 2200 kg.
Below is a video of the test process.
